Belluno and the surrounding area
A walk around town, a day by the lake or a mountain hike: Belluno is a base for exploring Valbelluna, the Prealps and the Belluno Dolomites. Here are a few places to include in your stay.
Belluno’s historic centre
Piazza dei Martiri, Piazza del Mercato and Piazza Duomo are good starting points for exploring on foot. The town’s themed walks also lead towards Borgo Piave, taking in historic buildings, river views and places associated with the writer Dino Buzzati.
Nevegal and Col Visentin
Woodland and meadow trails offer views across Valbelluna and the Dolomites. Options range from the Faverghera viewpoint to longer walks towards Col Visentin. There is plenty to explore here without heading into the high mountains.
Mount Schiara, via ferratas and Rifugio Settimo Alpini
Mount Schiara rises to the north of Belluno. From Case Bortot, a trail climbs through the Ardo Valley to Rifugio Settimo Alpini, beneath the rock faces; this hike requires a good level of fitness. The mountain hut also serves as a base for the Zacchi, Berti and Piero Rossi via ferratas: very demanding routes for experienced, well-prepared people with appropriate equipment.
Valmorel’s Giro delle Malghe
This circular walk covers around 7 km with 240 metres of ascent, through woodland, pastures and traditional mountain farms known as malghe. Starting in Valmorel’s village square, it passes Pianezze, Malga Van, Canal del Gat and Montegal. A stop for local food can be part of the walk; check the farms’ opening times beforehand.
Soffia Waterfall and Lake Mis
In the Mis Valley, a viewing terrace overlooks Soffia Waterfall and its gorge. Nearby, the Cadini del Brenton trail passes rock pools and small cascades carved by the stream. Both can be included in a day exploring the valley and lakeside.
Lake Santa Croce
In Alpago, Lake Santa Croce offers lakeside walks, time by the water and sailing sports. It is known for windsurfing, kitesurfing and sailing, while the Sbarai wetland nature area offers another way to explore the lakeside environment.
